Electrical Safety & Building Regulations
Since 1 January 2005, domestic electrical work in England and Wales has been covered by Building Regulations Part P. That means new installations—and many alterations or additions—must be designed, installed, inspected and tested to defined safety standards, with proper documentation.
Unsafe or incorrectly installed electrics put people at risk and can invalidate your insurance. Part P was introduced to cut shocks, burns and fires caused by poor domestic wiring.
Proving compliance
If you carry out notifiable electrical work, you’ll need evidence of compliance (often requested when selling your home). You can meet this requirement in either of two ways:
- Competent Person self-certification — Work carried out and certified by a NAPIT-registered electrician (our route).
- Local Authority Building Control approval — A completion certificate issued by your council after submission of the required test documentation.
